Ton Kalle - Sculptor of Stone
- About the artist
Ton Kalle (born December 23, 1955, in Terneuzen) is a Dutch sculptor internationally known for his monumental sculptures in natural stone, particularly granite. He lives and works in Amsterdam and is one of the most important contemporary Dutch stone sculptors. His work is characterized by simplicity, stillness, and a deep connection with nature.
Kalle trained at the Academy of Visual Arts in Amersfoort, where he developed into a specialist in working with hard types of stone. Unlike many sculptors, he tries to preserve the stone as much as possible in its original form. With minimal intervention, he creates powerful, abstract forms in which mass, balance, light, and space take center stage. He describes his work as “the language of stone,” in which simplicity, silence, and tranquility play a meditative role.
His sculptures often have an organic and almost archaic character. The influence of natural forces, landscapes, stars, water, and cosmic forms is clearly visible in his oeuvre. Polished surfaces alternate with rough fracture lines, creating tension between control and the pure power of the material. Kalle's work does not seek out the enclosed museum space, but rather a dialogue with the landscape and public space.
Over the years, Ton Kalle has realized countless monumental works in the Netherlands and abroad. His sculptures are permanently installed in Amsterdam, Drenthe, Germany, Egypt, and South Korea, among others. Well-known works include *De Gewichtheffer*, *Any Way the Wind Blows*, *The Well*, *Looking for Venus*, and *So What*. Additionally, his sculptures have been presented at international sculpture symposia and exhibitions throughout Europe and Asia.
Characteristic of Ton Kalle's oeuvre is the quiet self-evidence with which his sculptures take their place in their surroundings. His work radiates contemplation and timelessness and invites slowing down and reflection. In doing so, he has acquired a unique position within contemporary European sculpture.
