Wouter van der Spek is a versatile Dutch artist and musician, born in Amsterdam. His artistic journey began at d'Witte Lelie in the Spiegelstraat in Amsterdam, where he regularly visited the Stedelijk Museum. Here he was inspired by various artists and developed the idea to try something from every great artist in his search for his own style. This approach led to some frustration with his painting teacher, who preferred to see him develop in a specific direction.

In 1984, Van der Spek visited the exhibition "Grande Parade" in the Stedelijk Museum, where he was deeply impressed by the work of Anselm Kiefer. Kiefer's solo exhibition in 1986 reinforced this admiration and had a lasting influence on his own work.

After completing his studies, Van der Spek decided to focus on music, with painting and sculpture temporarily taking a back seat. He was active in various bands, produced CDs and DVDs, and went on tour. In addition, he presented radio programs, collaborated with Amsterdam bands, organized festivals in Paradiso, programmed music in Club Winston, and was a sound engineer at the Melkweg Café. He was also involved in organizing, judging, and presenting pop competitions and taught at art schools. Despite this musical focus, he continued to paint occasionally, although he himself was not completely satisfied with these works.

After moving from Amsterdam to Oostzaan, Van der Spek was given more space and opportunity to focus on painting and sculpting. Inspired by the polder landscape, he began to paint landscapes, not from direct observation, but based on his memories and the impressions that the landscape made on him. It is striking that he only signs his works on the back, because he believes that a signature on the front is a "stain on your work and ego-affirming".

Van der Spek's artistic journey illustrates a continuous search for expression, in which he has found his own way in both music and visual art.
