About the artist
Sami Briss was born in 1929, in Briss, Romania. He spent his childhood in a Jewish community, which is why he still strongly identifies with Jewish culture. Briss moved to Israel thirty years later. In 1974 he moved to Paris, where he has been living ever since.
As a painter, he frequently incorporates the concept of nostalgia into his work. Childhood memories are captured through harmony, and stylized fish, birds and figures. His use of gold leaf can be related to both Jewish tradition and Romanian Christian folk art. Briss has been exhibited throughout the entirety of Europe.
