About the artist

Petrus Johannes Schotel (1808, Dordrecht – 1865, Dresden, Germany) was a Dutch painter. Just like his father Johannes Christiaan (1787 – 1838), who taught him to paint, he was a very talented marine artist. Journeys to France influenced his way of painting. His pictures got a warmer character.

Petrus Johannes worked for several years as a drawing teacher at the Koninklijk Instituut voor de Marine (Royal Marine School) at Medemblik. As to the technical and historical aspects of vessels, Johannes was an expert. His seascapes and paintings of vessels are in the collections of many museums in Holland. Schotel married Marie Victoire De Veye. Their daughter Petronella Elisabeth Schotel became an artist as well. She painted flowers and still lifes. In 1850, Schotel left Medemblik for Kampen. In 1860, he moved to Düsseldorf and in the same year, he settled in Dresden, where he stayed the rest of his life.
