About the artist

Nicole Thoss (1979, Germany) learnt her basic ceramic skills from Gunther Hagl in Großostheim and then went on to complete her education at the Fachschule für Keramikgestaltung in Höhr-Grenzhausen. After her graduation in 2002 she established her own practice as independent ceramics artist. Her work has been exhibited among others in Germany, Poland and South-Korea and is part of many private collections. Nicole Thoss has won many prizes with her ceramic works, the 2010 3rd Prize of the German Richard-Bampi-Preis for outstanding young ceramic artists certainly being the most prestigious.

Parallel to developing her ceramic skills, from early on she was attracted heavily to the fields of photography and graphic art. This has resulted in very authentic bodies of work combining photos taken by herself with graphic images transferred onto boxes of clay, called Bilderkisten. Through these Bilderkisten Nicole tells stories, but only in fragments. She shows her view of the world, put in a new unusual context. Her works are individual pieces of art, her own "fragile" storyboards. Strange atmospheres characterize her work, challenging the observer to discover what her real message is, if any...

Nicole Thoss is ceramist, using sounds, photography, newspapers and a photocopier. She is also a painter and a graphic designer. Important subjects in her work are dreams, memories and present moments. She was born in 1979 in Gera and in 2004 she became a member of the artist collective WAV. In 2007 she joined the workshop KASINO in Höhr-Grenzhausen. Her work is shown in France, Holland, Italy and Germany.
