Leonardo da Vinci was the epitome of the Renaissance ideal. He was a Homo Universalis and the leading artist and intellectual of the Italian Renaissance. Da Vinci’s talent is universally recognized and he’s known for his enduring works "The Last Supper" and "Mona Lisa."

Da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452, in the Italian village of Vincy, Tuscany. He was an illegitimate son of a wealthy Florentine notary and a peasent girl. During his childhood Leonardo received basic education in Latin, geometry and mathematics. In 1466 he was apprenticed to the sculptor and painter Andrea del Verrocchio (1435 - 1488) in Florence. Here, he studied drawing, chemistry, metallurgy, mechanics, painting, sculpting and modeling. He soon reached master status and he established an own workshop in Florence. During his life he worked on behalf of the most important families of Italy, one of which were the d'Medici. He painted the 'Mona Lisa' under the patronage of Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan. He also worked for Pope Leo X and the French king Frances I. Leonardo died on May 2, 1519 at the age of 67. He left behind many renowned paintings, research on human anatomy and many inventions; few of which were actually realised.
