James Gillray (13 August 1757 – 1 June 1815) was an English painter, cartoonist and etcher. Together with the satirical artists William Hogarth, Thomas Rowlandson and George Cruikshank, Gillray made eighteenth-century England the center of caricature art. His critical prints against Napoleon Bonaparte's France were particularly notorious. The nickname 'Little Boney', with which the English at the time referred to the French emperor, came from Gillray. James Gillray also introduced the character John Bull to the English cartoons. To this day, the name John Bull is a mockery for the English.
