About the artist

Hendrik Cornelisz. Vroom was a Dutch draughtsman, painter and engraver during the Golden Age. He also designed tapestry and was one of the pioneers of Dutch marine art. He was close friends with the famous biographer Karel van Mander who described him at an early age as a keen painter of ships.

Vroom later went on to paint important scenes depicting the Dutch and English fleets and inspired many young painters with his novel compositions. He is not to be confused with his father, Cornelis Vroom the sculptor or his sons Cornelis Hendriksz Vroom and Frederik Hendriksz Vroom whom he also taught drawing and painting.
