About the artist

Edwin Lord Weeks was an American artist. His earliest known paintings date from 1867 when he was eighteen years old. In 1872, Weeks moved to Paris and after his studies in Paris he emerged as one of America’s major painters of Orientalist subjects. Throughout his life he travelled to South America, Egypt, Persia, Morocco and India. He also wrote an illustrated book of travels, ‘From the Black Sea through Persia and India’, in 1895. Weeks was a member of the Légion d’honneur, France, an officer of the Order of St. Michael, Germany, and a member of the Munich Secession. He exhibited his work in nearly every annual Paris Salon and won the Legion of Honor in 1896.
