  Léonard Pelgrims was a Belgian painter best known for his artistic depictions of Africa, particularly the former Belgian Congo. Active during the first half of the twentieth century, Pelgrims became associated with the tradition of Belgian colonial art, a movement in which European artists documented and interpreted the landscapes, people, and daily life of colonial territories through painting and drawing.

  Born in Belgium in 1894, Pelgrims developed his artistic career during a period when Congo occupied an important place within Belgian cultural and political consciousness. Like several artists of his generation, he travelled to Central Africa and found inspiration in its tropical landscapes, villages, rivers, markets, and local communities.
