Henri Jean-Joseph Ubaghs (1852-1937) Portrait of a Balinese model wearing batik and gold bracelets Signed lower right, J. Ubaghs Oil on canvas, 78 x 56 cm Jean Ubaghs was born in Liège where he studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts and later became a professor at the same Académie. On April 8th, 1886, Ubaghs married Clara Marie Albertine L’hoest from Liège. Ubaghs painted this same Indonesian model more often as well as another model from the Orient. He is not known to have travelled outside Europe or even outside Belgium.

Jean Ubaghs nasceu em Liège onde estudou na Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts e mais tarde tornou-se professor na mesma Académie. Em 8 de abril de 1886, Ubaghs casou-se com Clara Marie Albertine L'hoest de Liège. Ubaghs pintou este mesmo modelo indonésio com mais frequência, bem como outro modelo do Oriente. Ele não é conhecido por ter viajado para fora da Europa ou mesmo fora da Bélgica.
