  Circa 1900, a late Victorian spider brooch in 18 carat red gold and silver, its body formed by a luminous blister pearl. The head is set with an oval garnet, with three rose cut diamonds adding a glint of life. Modelled legs give the creature a poised,almost playful stance. If one must let a little creature creep close, this is the one.

  Although it carries a typical French control mark representing an owl, we cannot be sure it is actually French as the owl was also used for items in finished condition that were brought to be examined by the French Assay office (the eagle’s head was used for items brought in unfinished).
