  In the foreground, we see a woman in a light blue coat and red skirt walking a path through a park-like area, where the bare trees and traces of snow or wet grass suggest a cold winter day. The atmosphere is melancholic, yet also enlivened by the warm glow of lights and colors radiating from the fairground tent. At the center of the painting is a large merry-go-round with a red-and-blue striped tent and illuminated horses turning. The rounded shapes and warm tones contrast sharply with the cool grays of the sky and the bare trees, giving the work an almost cinematic, dreamlike quality. On the right, slightly in the background, we recognize the Eiffel Tower, subtly rising from the Parisian sky. Beyond the fairground, other attractions appear to be present, and the shadows of visitors convey a sense of movement and life. Hordijk is known for his depictions of urban entertainment, circuses, and fairground scenes, in which he captures the light, rhythm, and atmosphere of the moment. This work fits in perfectly: it is a play of light, colour and emotion, in which the joy of the fair forms a poetic counterbalance to the grey, almost gloomy evening sky.

  Gerardus Hordijk nasceu em 1899 em Haia, Holanda. Ele era conhecido como artista gráfico, ilustrador e pintor. Hordijk estudou engenharia em Delft, mas continua fazendo aulas na Academia de Belas Artes de Haia. Ele se formou em ambos os estabelecimentos. Em 1927, Hordijk mudou-se para Paris e foi morar no mesmo complexo de estúdios que Piet Mondriaan na época; Rue du Départ. Aqui, ele produz principalmente pinturas a óleo, guaches e aguarelas inspiradas no balé. Mas ele também desenvolve um estilo de trabalho pessoal que incorpora muito ocre, enquanto seu trabalho posterior exibe uma serenidade mais simples. Hordijk também gostava de pintar temas clássicos figurativos, como banhistas na Côte d'Azur, paisagens urbanas e naturezas mortas de flores. Em 1930, Hordijk se casa com sua esposa americana Margaret Mathews, que estava visitando a França e aprendendo o idioma na época. O casal morou em Amsterdã por um tempo, antes de se mudar para Nova York em 1940 e mudar seu sobrenome para Hordyk para fins de marketing. Assim como Hordijk, Mondriaan também se mudou para Nova York em 1940. Os dois se encontravam regularmente e trocavam cartas. Em 2006, o negociante de arte Marcel Gieling descobriu o legado quase completo de Hordijk em uma vila vazia; continha centenas de pinturas e aquarelas, ao lado de cartas de Mondriaan. Depois que Hordyk se mudou para Amsterdã mais uma vez, sua popularidade só cresceu. Em 15 de outubro de 1958, Hordyk faleceu na mesma cidade.
