- Sobre arteThe small oval basket is pierced and engraved with rocaille and floral motifs. The pierced handles and four supports are moulded with rocaille ornaments. Engraved at the reverse with the initials R and L. Fully marked at the reverse and also struck with the assay mark of 1795 for Amsterdam and the tax mark of 1807. Displaying an assay stripe.
Steven Jan van Hengel was active as a silversmith from 1752 till 1767, the year in which he died. His father, Dirk van Hengel, with whom he had shared his workshop, continued the business with Steven Jan’s widow. Steven Jan’s maker’s mark remained in use, which was rather common at that time. Since the object was checked by the Guild in 1770, it is possible that this object was manufactured after Steven Jan’s death.
A similar basket, with the maker’s mark of Steven Jan van Hengel, dated 1771, is recorded in Dutch Silver, Vol. II. The latter one, owned by Joseph M. Mopurgo from Amsterdam, was exhibited in The Hague in 1952.
