- Over kunstwerkGeorges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788): 20 old-colored engravings from “L’Histoire naturelle des oiseaux”. Buffon was the intendant of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris from 1739 to 1788. He became known as author of the monumental series “Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière”, which was printed in 36 volumes between 1749 and 1788. These 20 beautiful engravings come from one of the birds-devoted volumes. Sheet size: 21,1 x 27,3; image size: circa 14,5 x 19 cm.
- Over kunstenaarGeorges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon was a French naturalist, mathematician, cosmologist, and encyclopédiste. His works influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Georges Cuvier. Buffon published thirty-six quarto volumes of his Histoire Naturelle during his lifetime; with additional volumes based on his notes and further research being published in the two decades following his death. It has been said that "Truly, Buffon was the father of all thought in natural history in the second half of the 18th century".
