Over de kunstenaar

Raden Sarief Bastaman Saleh was an Indonesian painter whose work resembles the 19th century European romantic tradition. He is presumably the first Indonesian painter who worked in an European style. The subjects of his paintings were usually related to the culture of the Dutch indies.

He was schooled by multiple Dutch and Belgian romantic painters after painter Antoine Payen persuaded the Dutch government to grant Raden Saleh a scholarship. Since 1829, Saleh was tutored by Cornelis Kruseman and Andreas Schelfhout, who respectively learned him portraiture and landscape painting. Because of his exotic descent, he was viewed upon as a curiosity and was invited to European courts. which may have led to his success as an artist. He has traveled through Europe and Northern Africa as well.

Raden Salehs work was exhibited in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. He returned to the Dutch Indies in 1851 where he continued to paint Javanese landscapes and portraits of Javanese nobility. He eventually passed away in 1880 in the Dutch Indies.
