N.B. When Conrad Kickert was a young artist he stayed in Paris for a while, where he got to know painters like Picasso and Braque. Back in the Netherlands he started the 'Moderne Kunstkring', where he exhibited their French Cubist paintings for the first time in Holland. The influence of the cubist-style with its monochrome, brownish colours can be seen in this still life.

Johan Conrad Theodoor Kickert tot den Egmond nasce a L'Aia nel novembre 1882, muore a Parigi il 26 giugno 1965. Pittore autodidatta, Kickert si reca a Domburg, insieme a Jan Toorop, ea Bergen. Fu uno dei primi artisti a lavorare nello stile del cubismo. Nel 1910, fondò con Piet Mondriaan, Jan Sluyters e Jan Toorop, il Moderne Kunstkring, sostenendo l'arte d'avanguardia. Tra il 1912 e il 1913 organizzarono diverse mostre allo Stedelijk Museum. Nel 1912 Kickert si trasferì a Parigi, dove visse in uno studio a Montparnasse. Kickert si è spostato in prestigiose società d'arte ed ha esposto con pittori, come Georges Braque, Raoul Dufy, Henri Matisse, Maurice Utrillo, Kees van Dongen e Maurice Vlaminck. Durante la prima guerra mondiale tornò in Olanda ma nel 1919 si stabilì definitivamente in Francia. Tuttavia, visitò spesso i Paesi Bassi. Negli anni '20 Kickert iniziò ad adottare uno stile più naturalistico. Tra i suoi soggetti figurano figure, paesaggi e nature morte. Sebbene avesse avuto successo in Francia, Kickert sprofondò nell'oblio nella sua terra natale. Il suo lavoro è incluso nel Gemeentemuseum Den Haag.
