    Lodewijk Johannes Kleijn (1817-1897) - Wintergezicht

    Lodewijk Johannes Kleijn was a Dutch painter in oil paint, watercolor and lithography. Kleijn was born in Loosduinen in 1817 as the son of the shoemaker Pieter Klein and Wilhelmina van der Post. He was a pupil of Andreas Schelfhout. His subjects were landscapes, especially winter and forest landscapes, animal representations, city and seascapes. Kleijn belonged to the Dutch romantics. Klein mainly painted in The Hague and surroundings. Around 1840 he stayed and painted in Kleve for some time. Paintings from Kleijn's are at the collections of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Gemeentemuseum The Hague and the Museum Rotterdam. Kleijn married Kaatje van Dijk in The Hague on 20 May 1846.     Como aluno de Andreas Schelfhout, Kleijn pintou muitas paisagens de inverno com figuras patinando e andando de trenó no gelo reflexivo. Ele também fez cenas de rio e praia no verão e paisagens panorâmicas nas quais ele transmite infalivelmente a atmosfera tranquila e a luz quente dos dias da estação. Em 1840 ele ficou por um tempo em Kleve, Alemanha, mas não se sabe se ele foi lá para ver B.C. Koekkoek. Não há evidências concretas de que ele teve aulas na academia de desenho deste último. Apenas algumas de suas pinturas, retratando motivos da cidade e a área ao redor de Kleve, confirmam o tempo que Kleijn passou nesta cidade.
