Willem Jan Pieter van der Does was a Dutch illustrator, painter, draftsman and watercolourist. He was the son of a sea captain and for a period lived and worked in the Dutch East Indies. In 1923 he was one of the first Dutchmen to travel to Antarctica. There, he made 134 sketches for his book ‘Storm, ijs en walvisschen. Een moderne vikingtocht, met Noorsche walvischvaarders naar de Zuidelijke IJszee.’ He also painted the landscapes, seascapes and everyday life scenes of the Dutch East Indies. From 1946 on, he lived in the Netherlands again.
