Over de kunstenaar

Philip van Dijk was one of the most favoured painters of the Hague in the second quarter of the 18th century. His delicate conversation pieces and elegant portraits were very much in demand. He was nicknamed “the little van Dijck” after the Flemish 17th century painter sir Anthony van Dijck.

Artists biographer Johan van Gool wants us to believe that van Dijk was born in Amsterdam in 1680. In fact he was born on januari 31. 1683 in Oud Bijerland as the son of Adriaan Jacobse van Dijk and Elisabeth Melssen van Wijngaarden. At the age of 13 he took up an apprenticeship at the workshop of Arnold Boonen in 1696. Afterwards he probably worked for Adriaen van der Werff in Rotterdam. There he marries Geertruid van Beekhuysen on december 5. 1708. In the same year he becomes a member of the guild in Middelburg.

From 1718 onwards he lived in the Hague where he achieves a reputation as a painter and arts dealer. He took care of the family collections of van Wassenaer Obdam, Schuylenburch and Dishoek. He also was a collector who left 165 paintings in his legacy.

In 1725 van Dijk is appointed painter to the court of Wilhelm VII of Hessen Kassel, one of the most renowned collectors of 17th century Dutch paintings in Germany. This was a favourable position for him, because he not only painted for the sovereign, but also was able to sell him a number of paintings as a dealer.

The van Dijks never had children of their own, but adopted the son of a relative. This Philip Bartholomeus van der Linden van Dijk stayed an obscure portrait painter.
Although van Dijk is named in all art reference books, he is mainly noticed as an arts dealer.
