    This work from 1921 shows Altink developing towards a new way of working. The use of the colour purple in the depiction of the road between the haystack and the grey-green barns, the lightening pink in the horizon formed by the silhouette of town and the blue of the centrally located cart, all point towards Altinks return to Groningen.

    Jan Altink era miembro del círculo de pintores de Groningen De Ploeg. Sin embargo, se distinguió de sus compañeros por preferir trabajar al aire libre. Es mejor conocido por sus paisajes y escenas de pueblos locales, junto con las vistas de la ciudad y el retrato ocasional y la naturaleza muerta. Al principio su paleta se limitó principalmente a tonos grises y verdes, pero después de 1924 llegó su período expresionista cuando registró la realidad en colores fuertes y vivos y formas simplificadas en pintura de cera.
