About the Artist

Jannes de Vries (1901, Meppel – 1986, Groningen) was a Dutch aquarellist, painter, engraver, etcher, draughtsman, pen draughtsman, illustrator. From 1918 to 1922 he studied at the Rijksnormaalschool voor Teekenonderwijzers (Teachers’ Training College of Drawing), Amsterdam, where he received his MO-akte Tekenen (Teaching Certificate of Drawing). Subsequently, he trained at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (Academy of Fine Arts) in Paris (1922-1923). Between 1923 and 1924 he stayed in Rome. Much later he travelled around southern Italy and North-Africa (1969-1970). De Vries belongs to the art movement De Ploeg (The Plough) in Groningen. In 1926, he was even Chairman of this group of artists. His subject matters are still lifes, flower still lifes, figures, landscapes and biblical themes. He had a solo exhibition in the Museum Groningen in 1962, and in Kampen in 1964. In 1970 he received the Culturele Prijs (Cultural Prize) Groningen for Painting.
