Gies Backes is a Dutch painter who was born in Venlo in 1977. From 1996 to 2000 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht. In 2006 he became Artist-in-Residence in Berlin. He was honoured with the Royal Award for Painting in 2009 and 2004. He has had various exhibitions in the Netherlands among others, Venlo, Maastricht, Breda, Amsterdam. In his paintings, he is inspired by his surroundings, in particular, everyday objects such as garden chairs, chandeliers and stones. He uses photographs as a starting point for his paintings. After creating a rough sketch of the photo, he starts to paint.
