About the artwork

Jan Jacob Spohler was trained as a painter in the studio of the then noted history painter Jan Willem Pieneman. He gradually applied himself to painting detailed Dutch summer and winter landscapes. These had all the ingredients that made such scenes so popular in the 19th century: tranquil summer river views with sailing craft and rowing boats, people busily engaged, or cold winter scenes of reflective ice, leafless trees, skaters and shared conviviality around a refreshment stall.

About the Artist

Jan Jacob Spohler was born in 1811. The first painting lessons were from his father and he proved himself to be a good pupil. Later on Jan Jacob Spohler was trained as a painter in the studio of the then noted history painter Jan Willem Pieneman.
Jacob Jan Coenraadmainly painted figures enjoying the pleasures of winter ice. He depicted endless variations of snow-covered countryside alongside expanses of reflective ice with swaying skaters and refreshment stands.  J.J.C. Spohler lived and worked in Amsterdam and regularly exhibited his paintings, among others, at the Exhibitions of Living Masters.
