About the artist

Pieter Starreveld is a Dutch artist from Koog aan Zee who primarily worked as a sculptor and belongs to the ‘Bronner’ School. Starreveld studied at the ‘Kunstnijverheidsschool’ in Amsterdam. He then continued his studies at the State Academy of Fine Art in Amsterdam from 1929 until 1932 where he became a student of sculptor Jan Bronner. Later on he would be tutored by Gijs Jacobs van den Hof in Arnhem. Next to being active as a sculptor, Starreveld worked as a medalist, graphic artist, painter and glass artist.
He primarily worked ‘en taille directe’, which means that he directly worked with his materials, without sketching or designing and thereby not formulating a clear idea of the final form of the piece. He also used other techniques such as linoleum, glass and enamel work.
Starreveld created numerous memorial monuments after the Second World War, a war in which he contributed to the resistance with Albert Helman. In the 1950s, Starreveld began to work with bronze and used the old ‘cire perdue’ method for his sculptures.
He was a member of the Dutch society of Sculptors NKVB. He died in Amersfoort in 1989.
