About the artist

NICOLAS, Paul (Laval 1875 - 1952 Nancy)

Paul Nicolas was born in 1875 in Laval-sous-Bruyère. After completing his studies in architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Nancy, he started working at the Cristalleries de Saint-Louis. This factory had already started in Münzthal in 1586. In 1893 Paul Nicolas was hired as a crystal decorator at Emile Gallé. There he received extensive training in glass enamelling and etching, and was quickly involved in the production of Gallé's more precious pieces. Due to his botanical knowledge, he became responsible for the creation of floral compositions. Some of Gallé's creations at the 1900 World's Fair were made in close collaboration with Paul Nicolas. After the death of Emile Gallé in 1904, Paul Nicolas, together with Louis Hestaux, took over the artistic direction of Gallé. During this time, Paul Nicolas also became a board member of the “Ecole de Nancy” of which he was a member since 1901. After the First World War, Paul Nicolas left the Gallé company and in 1918 founded his own workshop, the Association des Graveurs Réunis, together with Paul Mercier, among others. For the supply of raw materials, they worked closely with his first employer, the Cristalleries de Saint-Louis-lès-Bitche. His works are usually signed with "D'Argental" (with the Cross of Lorraine), or with "L'Art Verrier". sometimes with “P Nicolas Nancy”.

NICOLAS, Paul ( Laval 1875 – 1952 Nancy )
