About the artist

NaÏma Aouni (°1987) has been walking the path of figurative drawing and painting for a number of years now. Seventeenth-century art - especially the works of Caravaggio and Velazquez - grabbed Aouni by the scruff of the neck at an early stage. The way in which these masters portrayed the human figure as a carrier of affects fascinated her immensely.
In her own work, the individual plays the leading role. The loner is isolated in an indefinable space and seems to be thrown back on himself.
Often overcome by melancholy, the person portrayed expresses the human condition. Naïma identifies with the state of mind of her figures. That is why it is important for her to choose the models for the paintings herself. Before starting new work, she organises photoshoots with people she feels an affinity with. The eyes and look of the painter's models are important selection criteria here. The photo shoots in the studio help new images to organically crystallise in the artist's mind.
