About the artist

Formally known as Marie Jeannette Sophie Lucie Drabbe, Mies discovered her talent for drawing and painting at a very early age. She later excelled in her portrait paintings, but also created many landscapes, seascapes, still-lives and oil paintings of people and animals. In 1898 she met the famous painter Jan Toorop. The two artists became involved in a close friendship that lasted until his death in 1928. Toorop also assisted her in her practice as a professional artist. Through Toorop, she received the opportunity to take courses at the Academy of Fine Art in The Hague and met the artist Piet Mondriaan. The influence of Toorop is clearly visible in het portraits, whereas Mondriaan’s inspiration can be seen in some of her land- and seascapes.
