About the artist

Kenzo is a French luxury house that was founded by Japanese designer Kenzo Takada in 1970. Takada moved to Paris in 1964 after studying at a fashion school in Tokyo in order to launch his fashion career. Kenzo Takada became known for using Asian and Japanese influences combined with the tradition of the European haute couture. He started his career with his 'Jungle Jap' boutique that was located in Paris and first designed handmade women's clothing. His aim was to shake up the 'jungle' world of fashion, by creating for instance their tiger shirt.

In 1971, the American fashion magazine Vogue predicted that his oversized gardening trousers, unusual shoulder shapes and widened sleeves would become the new trend in Paris. They were right, which led to Kenzo being commonly known in Paris for his ability to combine traditional Japanese clothing with modern use of fabric. Only in 1983 Kenzo started designing collections for men and kids in 1987. Many world famous celebrities such as Beyoncé, Rihanna, Zooey Deschanel, Lorde and Selena Gomez have publicly worn his clothing. In 1993, Kenzo sold his company to Luis Vuitton Moët Hennessy.
