About the artist

Johannes Weiland was a Dutch painter and the uncle of Frits and Jacob Weiland, also painters. Weiland was a student at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten (Academy of Fine Arts) in Rotterdam where he would later teach himself from 1879 on. He lived and worked in Rotterdam and The Hague. He was a member of the artist association Pulchri Studio in The Hague and the Aesthetisch Genootschap (Aesthetical Association) in Rotterdam. He worked with oil paint or watercolour and painted genre scenes, (church) interiors, landscapes, portraits and still lives.
