About the artist

Jean-Pierre Tavernier was a reputable eighteenth century Parisian clockmaker who signed his dials Tavernier à Paris. He was established at rue de Bussy. His aristocratic clientele included engraver and connoisseur the duc de Caylus. He was especially renowned for his watches but also made and sold outstanding clocks. Tavernier worked well into the second half of the eighteenth century, during which time clock cases housing his movements reflected the Neo-classical taste.
