About the artist

Jan Frederik Schütz was born in Middelburg, the Netherlands, where he studied at the Middelburgse Tekenacademie. He became a drawing teacher in this town after he couldn't become a sailor due to his deafness. He became a very talented painter of see scapes, land and city scapes. His works are mostly watercolours, paintings and drawings. Most of his works are considered to be Realistic Impressionism. Around 1860 Schütz became more influenced by realism and abandoned the more romantic style.
