About the artist

Harry van Kruiningen was born in Kruiningen as Henri Adelbert Janssen but as an artist often used the name Harry van Kruiningen or Harry Janssen. He was a versatile artist; amongst others a painter, illustrator, graphic designer and monumental artist. He went to the Instituut voor Kunstnijverheid, later the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, and Tekeninstituur Piersma, both in Amsterdam, between 1927 and 1928. After he graduated he worked as an artist for the rest of his life. In 1928 he had his first exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum, as a member of the Onafhankelijken, an artist association established against the dominant conception of art, organising ‘jury free’ exhibitions. Van Kruiningen mainly painted in the style of the Nieuwe Zakelijkheid (New Objectivity or Neue Sachichkeit), a movement in German art that arose during the 1920s as a reaction against expressionism. He teached at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten (Academy of Fine Arts) in Arnhem from 1958 to 1971 and wrote a book about the technique of graphic arts. Besides the Onafhankelijken, he was a member of ten artist associations and has received multiple prizes for his work, both national and international. Today, his work is shown in several Dutch museums.
