About the artist

Francisco Sobrino is a sculptor born in Guadalajara Spain in 1932. He moved to Madrid where he studied at the School of Arts and Crafts for three years. Afterwards he moved to Argentina where he studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de Buenos Aires for seven years. At this school he met his lifelong friend Julio Le Parc with whom he moved to Paris in 1958. Together with Le Parc he is one of the founders of the Groupe de Recherche d'Art Visuel also known as the GRAV. They are known for their interest in kinetic art, art in which movement is the central aspect of the artwork. Michael Duchamp was the founder of the kinetic art movement with his Bicycle Wheel in 1913.

Sobrino is a light and object artist, he creates geometric abstract sculptures. He started out with making reliefs and continued with making three-dimensinol objects from transparant plastic. His obsession with light is the reason he used Plexiglas for several works. He considered Plexiglas as a material that allowed light to play a game with the viewer. He mostly worked with the colors black and white, but also has some colorful works. Sobrino died in Bretagne in 2014 at the age of 82.
