About the artist

Fathi Hassan (Arabic: فتحي حسن) was born in Cairo (Egypt) on 10 May 1957. He is a mixed media artist, specialising in drawings, paintings, sculptures and installations. He lives and works in Edinburg, Scotland and Fano, Italy. He studied as a teenager at the Kerabia Middle School in Cairo where he was apprenticed to the sculptor Ghaleb Khater. In 1976, Hassan worked in a library in Cairo. After he was offered a job by the ministry, he settled in Baghdad in 1977. In 1979 he was granted a subsidy by the Italian Cultural Institute in Cairo and moved to Italy. He enrolled in the Accademia di Belle Arti of Naples in 1980 to study stage design. After graduating from the art academy, he began working as a stage designer at RAI (Radiotelevisione Italiana) in Naples and Rome. In 1986 he moved to Pesaro. In 1989 Hassan received recognition from the Ministry of Culture (Egypt) and he was the first artist who represented Africa at the Venice Biennale. Hassan experiments with the written and spoken word, exploring the theme of ancient languages wiped out by colonial domination. In his video installation Blessed Nubia the original language of the Egyptian region Nubia was analysed. He has participated in various solo and group exhibitions in Italy (1988 Venice Biennale), Belgium, Denmark, Egypt and New York.
