About the artist

Emile Frederique Eliodore Testa (1821-1896) came from an Italian family and was born in Contantinople (Istanbul). He worked as as a consul for the Netherlands in Tunis and Tripoli. He wrote a thesis about the laws of Islamic marriage at the University of Leiden under supervision of the historian Johannes Matthias Schrant (1783-1866). It was published in 1843.
