About the artist

Born in Poland, Émile Elsman-Semenowsky emigrated to Paris in the 1880’s where he worked as an assistant to the Belgian artist Jan van Beers. He adapted his style to suit the needs of the Parisian bourgeoisie, painting mostly sentimental portraits of women from the Middle-East and the old world. Later he also produced various genre paintings and nudes. Very little documentation remains of this artist and his endeavours.
