Emile Claus was a Flemish painter and important representative of Impressionism in Belgium. He went to the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten (Royal Academy of Fine Arts) in Antwerp where he was taught by Jacob Jacobs and mostly painted portraits and genre scenes. Influenced by the French Impressionists like Claude Monet, who he met during his travels to Paris around 1890, he changed his style from Realism to Impressionism. Claus developed Luminism and started the artist group Vie et Lumière (Life and Light) in 1904. The First World War interrupted his international success; he fled to London and returned in 1918. His works are to be seen in museums all over the world.
