About the artist

Dmitry Grigoryevich Levitsky was born in 1735 in Kiev, Russia, as the son of a priest and master of gravure printing. Levitsky inhereted both religious convictions and artistic talent, and he left for St. Petersburg in 1758, where he was apprenticed by Aleksey Antropov. His passion for his home town is clearly visible in paintings he made during this time. He was known as a main portraitist during the times of Catherine the Great. Ideals of the Enlightenment in the Russian Empire were a big influence on him as well. Levitzky died in 1822, in St. Petersburg, Russia.
