About the artist
Dirk Verberne (Helenaveen, 1982) was born and raised in the Peel and has grown close to it throughout his life. The rugged land, the black water, the flora and fauna and old stories about this region form an important source of inspiration for his work. Verberne is a master at forging steel sculptures. The growth and development, power, dynamics and organic forms of nature challenge him to capture them in the steel he works with, using fire as a tool. The bird sculptures express this diversity and mobility, with postures as characters. Growth can lead to an abstract form with lines that express vitality. Decay lends itself more to a still image with the hammer blows as earned marks. For centuries, the environment has made people fantasise in order to answer their questions. The sharing of these fantastic thoughts, in a work like the Erdmennekes, somewhere between nature spirit and gnome, invites you to see stories in them yourself.
