About the artist

Diederik Willem Rethmeijer worked as a silversmith in Amsterdam from 1785 until 1821. He had his own workshop at Lauriergracht and a shop at Prinsengracht, Amsterdam. In 1811 his stock comprised some 10.000 items. After his death in 1821 his widow took over the company.
Rethmeijer was a skilled craftsman, who was trained in the 18th century. Apart from his own shop he also supplied other retailers in Amsterdam, such as Bennewitz & Bonebakker, Diemont and Wouter Verschuur. Retmeijer specialized in salvers and trays.
