About the artist

Cornelis Engebrechtsz. was born in Leiden, around 1462 and throughout his life he probably never left the city. He was married to Elysbeth Pietersdr., with whom he raised three sons, all of which were to become painters. He is known to have played an important part in the education of a number of other painters from Leiden, including Lucas van Leyden. His name is first mentioned in archives because of a sale to the St. Hieronymusdal-monastery in Oestgeest. It is possible he was trained as an artist in this particular monastery, although he could have received training in either Brussels of Antwerp as well. After his death in 1527, an argument about his inheritance ensued: an indication he had become a man of considerable wealth. He was the first painter whose work could be attributed to him with certainty.
