About the artist

Cornelis Jan Mension lived and worked in Delft. Cornelis Jan Mension painted landscapes, townscapes and still lifes, but he became best known for his paintings of small animals such as birds and mice, monkeys and larger wild animals. As a painter he was formed by the lessons of Franz Helfferich in The Hague and after that he visited the Academy of Visual Arts in the same city. A fairly smooth impressionism is the style he used throughout his life. Mension was also an excellent etcher and lithographer.
