About the independent artist
The alphabet and punctuation marks, but also forms and assemblages derived from them (sometimes no longer recognizable as such) were and are the underlying ideas behind the work of Frans Thevis. The sculptural ceramic works are usually not narrative and in that sense do not need to convey a message or deeper meaning. The organic shapes, which look tough and robust, mean that the transparency, applications and monochrome finish, together with the raw skin (sintering gobe), have resulted in Frans's own recognizable style. The deliberate non-use of glazes is therefore exactly in line with the intention to make the work radiate a certain “nakedness” in this way. The various torsos etc. (shape and finish) are finished in the same way as the “alphabet”.
